The Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage for Survivors in Remission

October 4, 2024

A Focus for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to honoring survivors, supporting those currently in treatment, and raising awareness about breast cancer prevention and care.
At VIDA Boutique Spas, we recognize the importance of this month in fostering conversations about recovery, especially for individuals in remission. As part of our commitment, we are focusing on the benefits of lymphatic drainage for cancer survivors, particularly those who have faced breast cancer.
Breast cancer treatment can be physically and emotionally challenging, with side effects that extend far beyond the conclusion of medical interventions. Many survivors struggle with lymphedema, fatigue, and the lingering impact of surgeries or radiation therapy.
This is where lymphatic drainage can play a crucial role in the post-treatment recovery process.
The Role of Lymphatic Drainage in Breast Cancer Recovery
  • 1. Alleviates Lymphedema: For breast cancer survivors, especially those who have undergone lymph node removal or radiation therapy, lymphedema is a common concern. This condition results from the disruption of the lymphatic system, causing swelling in the arms, chest, or other parts of the body. Lymphatic drainage gently encourages fluid movement, reducing swelling and alleviating the discomfort that lymphedema brings.
  • 2. Eases Post-Surgical Discomfort: Many breast cancer survivors undergo surgeries such as mastectomies or lumpectomies, which can leave behind scar tissue, restricted movement, and discomfort. Lymphatic drainage helps to soften scar tissue and reduce fluid buildup in the affected areas, promoting more comfortable healing and improving range of motion.
  • 3. Promotes Emotional Healing: Breast cancer is not only a physical battle but also an emotional one. The stress, anxiety, and trauma associated with the disease can have a long-lasting impact on mental health. Lymphatic drainage, with its gentle and rhythmic movements, can promote deep relaxation and help ease emotional tension. This contributes to a sense of calm and well-being, which is essential for long-term recovery.
  • 4. Supports Immune Function and Detoxification: Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can leave behind toxins that burden the body’s natural detoxification processes. By promoting the circulation of lymph, lymphatic drainage helps the body filter out waste products, boosting the immune system and aiding in the recovery from the stress of treatment. This is particularly beneficial for breast cancer survivors, as it allows the body to return to a state of balance more quickly.

VIDA’s Focus for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

At VIDA, we understand that breast cancer recovery is a deeply personal journey that continues long after treatment ends. As part of our focus for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we aim to provide a healing environment where survivors can benefit from holistic therapies like lymphatic drainage. This therapy is not just about physical recovery—it’s about creating a space where survivors can feel nurtured, supported, and empowered on their path to full wellness.

By offering lymphatic drainage as part of our specialized services, we aim to raise awareness about its importance for breast cancer survivors in remission.

This October, we stand with the breast cancer community and encourage conversations about long-term healing and recovery.

Contraindications for Lymphatic Drainage

While lymphatic drainage is incredibly beneficial, it is not suitable for everyone. Individuals in remission from breast cancer or other cancers should always consult with their healthcare provider before starting this treatment.

Here are some contraindications to consider:

• Active cancer:
Lymphatic drainage should not be performed if cancer is still active, as it could potentially stimulate the spread of cancer cells.

• Infections:
Any active infection, especially in the lymphatic system, should be fully resolved before undergoing lymphatic drainage.

• Blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT):
Lymphatic drainage can increase the risk of dislodging clots, making it unsuitable for individuals with these conditions (unless recommended and cleared by their doctor).

• Heart conditions:
Those with serious heart issues should approach lymphatic drainage with caution, as the increased lymph flow may place additional strain on the heart.

• Severe kidney problems:
Lymphatic drainage may exacerbate kidney conditions, as the body processes more fluid and waste products during the treatment. Lymphatic drainage is an empowering tool for breast cancer survivors in remission, offering physical relief, emotional calm, and a sense of renewed vitality.

At VIDA, we honor the resilience of survivors and are dedicated to supporting their ongoing journey toward health and well-being this Breast Cancer Awareness Month and beyond.
